Ellis Meredith chapter completes DAR’s mission to promote Patriotism, Historic Preservation and Patriotism through it’s activities.
Some examples are:
PATRIOTISM — Flag Day Celebration
Flag Day is celebrated each year on Genesee Mountain, overlooking the City of Denver. A flagpole and monument were erected there by the
chapter in a ceremony that was held June 14, 1911. The flag base was designed and patented in 1927 by member Miss Annette Newcomb and is still in use. Each year, flags flown over the US Capital are given to the City and County of Denver through the Superintendent of
Parks and Recreation, who oversees the flying of the flag.
The ceremony is a tradition that continues to this day.
HISTORIC PRESERVATION — Four-Mile House
In the late 1800s, six “Mile Houses” along Cherry Creek provided food, lodging, and other services for stage coach travelers heading to or from Denver and the Rocky Mountain gold fields. Named for their distance from Denver, the mile houses sat on the combined Smoky Hill and Cherokee trails. They were located near what today we know as Leetsdale/Parker Road in Denver. Four-Mile House was located four miles from Denver.
Two brothers built the house in 1859. A year later a female businesswoman, May Cawker, bought the property from them and turned it into an inn, which served hot meals twice a day, and dances on the second floor. The present structure, Denver’s oldest standing structure) sits on 12 acres of land as is used as a museum, including a working farm.
